In the summer of 2012, Chicago City Council approved grant funding towards the initiation of a new project to identify and signify dangerous or structurally-compromised buildings in the City of Chicago, as a means to preemptively warn any firefighters and first-responders that this building is not safe and may collapse in a fire.

This press release from the Mayor's Office provides additional background and details on the implementation of the program. With the $675,000 grant funding to the CFD, they will work in conjuction with the Council on Buildings to determine which specific buildings qualify. Private contractors will be hired to install the 2' x 2' reflective red X "emblems" on the buildings.

This set of photos serves to document that process and its side effects across the city of Chicago, and creatively distort the program's perception through isolated colorization of the emblems.
