Buddha (perhaps)

    Newer Older

I'm off to Kham in Western Sichuan next month. In the meantime I need to brush up on my Tibetan Buddhist iconography. I'm not sure if this distinctly feminine deity is a buddha or a bodhisattva (or something else entirely). I'm sure the caption next to it in the Capital Museum provided that information. Must learn to take notes.

If I'm not mistaken, from the ornaments this image appears to be a beautiful Bodhisattva. The mudra of the hand (gesture) would tell you which bodhisattva. My guess is Tara.

A beauty! Om Tara Tu Tara Ture Svaha would be her mantra if it's indeed Tara.

May all beings be free from suffering. May all beings be happy. May all beings be freed from the sufferind of ignorance through their understanding of wisdom and compassion.

May the teachings of the Buddha prosper and grow in our world and contribute to love and understanding among all peoples. May they help bring peace happiness prosperity and abundance to all beings. May the emanations of all pervading kindness and compassion remain forever in our world to bring benefit to all beings.

May all beings experience, understand, and cherish the beauty of kindness.

Definitely a bodhisattva, from what one sees of the fingers, it may not be a buddha. (lookatme)

Just going for a wander. I need to see mountains again, and breathe real, clean (albeit thin) air.
