Riding the sub in New York I think for me has been the most memorable experience. It's like an underground world of its own -- the people you meet. I was riding late at night -- and there were only 2-3 people in the carriage. Very scary. An one of the women in a flamenco costume -- suddenly squat on the ground and had a bowel movement!! Nobody else said anything -- like it was the most normal thing.

but on the other hand, dear Rita: my wife was still bleeding in the subway after she hurt herself falling on the boardwalk; I didn't know how to help sitting in the train to Queens; but a wife next to Barbara took care vs. the bleeding very perfectly; then she told us, she had just escaped from the war in Sarajevo, former Yugoslavia, Europe; New York has a big heart and said welcome to so many refugees!

soon some more subway pics; because I love soul music: very often I've been heart touched by wonderful harmony singers, dancers, even people, falling asleep; actually I bought a book on underground trains all over the world: Berlin, Mexico City, Moscow etc.

Well Kolkata's subway is perhaps cleaner than the rest of the city -- the only place you can't eat, spit, litter like the rest of city :)

But it was built in the most strange way -- one linear line from north to the south so it connects very little of the city.

And yes, if you try to take your camera out and take pictures they chase you out. A security risk they say!!???

But New York I know people love. Its one city I have to admit in the U.S. which friends who lived there tried to make me like many times, but I found it difficult. I loved san francisco, and washington I really liked living in. But the strange thing is if i did not decide to leave the U.S. when I did my next job would have been in NYC :)))

I hope, dear RITA, that you once will be able to forget the bad US memories - all your bad memories in India too - to live a life in harmony as a journalist, openminded to the daily adventures - even by using a camera - I adore your urban studies: bicycles in the rain, a policeman in white, 3 friends talking in a rickshaw - you could make a wonderful calcutta calendar...
