howard pyle: the mermaid

Oil painting. 1910. A famous illustrator, Howard Pyle is famous for his intense colors, as you can see in the blues of the ocean and sky, and even the blue tones of the flesh. And in this case, a bit too much red around the lips.

For some reason I am really fond of art that shows the moon or sun. And this one does it nicely.

Love the way he has captured the water quality in this. The painting has an Art Nouveau look about it.

Yeah, he was famous for his water...all those pirate paintings he did, too. I need to get some of those...they are so well done. Don't see many illustrators these days that paint this good.

He was great. This painting is displayed at the Delaware Fine Arts Museum in Wilmington, Delaware. The story is that he died before he finished the painting. So their are some un Pyle like additions, such as the crab.
Whats nice about the display is that it was setup as he left it in his studio.

I highly recommend a visit to the Brandywine area to see this museum and the Brandywine Art Museum if you like Pyle, and his students such as NC Wyeth, Elizabeth Shippen Green, Maxfield Parrish and others...

If only I could've been a student there!!

Howard Pyle - probably my favorite 'illustrator' painter.
This one is wonderfully mythic, and i love it.

I've no idea why this painting is protected for 18+ viewers, but it's amazing!

Yeah, you're right. I changed it back to "safe"... when I had to go through all the nudes to change permissions, I could only see the thumbnails. I guess I must've thought it showed more than it did. :)
