vintage studio portrait: unknown relations

From my grandmother's collection of old family photos.

I know that it was common practice in portraits like this to have the man sitting while the woman stands behind or to the side with her hand on the man's shoulder. Not sure why, maybe it signified the wife's duty to serve? But this is one of the few I've seen where the woman appears (at least to me) to be in the dominant role. But it could also be the man's face and his meek sitting posture. I bet it's exactly opposite of what I think though. I'm bad at reading into things.
