Teach Me Gentle Flowers....
Teach me gentle flowers,
To wait for springtime showers
In this winter world to grow
Green and strong beneath the snow.
- Chr Richardt (1861) / Carl Mortensen, trans SD Rodholm
Hepatica, our first wildflowers to push up through last fall's leaf debris. Usually, the ground is still cold. Sometimes there are still patches of snow nearby.
From a distance, they seem tiny and delicate. Close up, however, you see the boldness they must possess in order to step out into the unsure world of half-spring. How do they know the exactly right moment? I wonder if they ever get it wrong? Unlike me, they are true risk-takers.
