This church is commonly known as Storkyrkan (The Great Church) but its real name is Sankt Nikolai kyrka (Church of Saint Nicholas). The church is located in Gamla Stan (The Old Town), next to the Royal Palace, Stockholm, Sweden. This church which is the oldest church in Gamla Stan has been the parish church of Nikolai parish, which cover the whole Gamla Stan since the Middle Ages. The oldest parts of the church dates back to the 1200’s and it has been rebuilt and enlarged several times. In 1942 Storkyrkan also become the cathedral of Stockholm when the Diocese of Stockholm was broken out from the Archdiocese of Uppsala and the Diocese of Strängnäs.

Among the most famous treasures in the church is the wooden statue of Saint George and the Dragon by Bernt Notke, commissioned to commemorate the Battle of Brunkeberg 1471.

Storkyrkan was also the place for the most widely spoken of event in Sweden this year, the marriage between Crown Princess Victoria and Daniel Westling on the 19th of June.
