Harry Clarke Stained Glass Window
The three-light stained glass crucifixion window behind the high altar of St. Joseph's Church, Terenure, Dublin. I spent my childhood and youth being a member of this church. I would gaze at these windows often and imagine. Not till recently did I know they were created by this wonderful artist.
Harry Clarke was born in Dublin in 1889. Not only is he renowned for his stained glass but also his few book illustrations. Many of his print blocks were destroyed in 1916. Gratefully his stained glass windows live on.
Harry specialised in both books illustration and stained glass but his passion was for the latter, evidenced by some 40 glass-based works completed in his all-too-short lifetime.
His unique style and use of rich colours singled him out as one of the greatest artists in his field and would eventually lead to global recognition. His works, incorporating religious, secular and literary themes, are to be found in numerous churches and buildings around Ireland and indeed worldwide. Prestigious works of art range from the famous windows that adorn Bewleys in Grafton St. to the then controversial Government-commissioned Geneva window, generally considered his masterpiece.

Many of his book illustrations remind me of where Jim Fitzpatrick gets his influence from.
