Behind the scenes at university convocation
Convocation is the annual event when students are awarded their
degrees. And the full regalia is put on by the various officials. As a
professor, I am part of the official train of people who sit on the
stage. I like to get to the session of Convocation at which any of my
own former students are graduating. At each session only a tiny
proportion of professors are present -- any more than a few would make
the stage too full. Along with the university's higher-ups (Deans,
President, University Orator, Convocation Marshal, past honorary
degree recipients -- all can be seen here), we gather in the theatre's
Green Room before the event starts.
These two shots were taken as we formed lines, just a couple of
minutes before the big door (in the top picture on the extreme right)
was slid open and we were marched down a large staircase to the stage
to the sounds of more-than-appropriate processional music.
