Rano Raraku

Rano Raraku, Rapa Nui

Rano Raraku is a volcanic crater on the slopes of the Terevaka volcano. It was used for 500 years as a quarry and supplied the stones from which the Moai were carved. There are still 397 unfinished Moai at the quarry. The Moai were carved out of the rock on the higher slopes of the volcano, then pushed downhill and from there transported to their destination.
