Green Lizard

    Newer Older

A green lizard sits still to avoid detection in the Amazon rain forest. Thanks to PrimevalNature for IDing this "Forest Dragon" or Guichenot's Dwarf Iguana (Enyalioides laticeps)!

I feel I should comment a bit on the Depth of Field, which is obviously a big part of what makes this image work (or not work) in some people's eyes. This was shot in the Amazon rain forest on a rainy morning. The lizard was half hidden under some leaves (see the next shot in the Ecuadorian Amazon photostream for a different angle). It obviously felt lying perfectly still and camouflaged was better than moving even as I ducked in under the leaves with my macro lens. Despite cranking the ISO to 800, I had to shoot wide open (2.8) to achieve 1/60th, even underexposing a third of a stop. My hands are naturally shaky, so I wasn't going to try for anything slower. The bottom line is that I didn't have much of a choice on DoF given the conditions, and while it would have been nice to have the nose in focus as well, I do think it's kinda cool the way you're drawn toward that intense stare. :)
