Needwood Baptist Church, 1873?, & 1885
New Hope, Glynn County GA
Founded by freed slaves on nearby Broadfield Plantation (now Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation) as Broadfield Baptist Church in 1866, with the first incarnation of this structure dating to about 1873, Needwood Baptist Church was relocated here and the present structure completed around 1885. It is one of the most important examples of African-American vernacular architecture in Georgia. It is also similar in appearance to Sprott Church in Alabama, made famous by William Christenberry, though Sprott has been badly modified.
