Ocean Char

    Newer Older

I recently had a chance to go to a friend's house for dinner on the day he received this Arctic Char from the Coppermine River. I went over with a bottle of white wine, photographed the fish, ate it and then drew it. The drawing part took days.....
Seen as is on Flickr, a ton of detail is not visible compared to original which is around 20 inches long.

My char was done on Crescent Cold Press Illustration Board 100% Rag Acide-Free Medium Textured Surface. I used a combination of Faber-Castell Polychromos and Derwent color pencils. This illustration took over 50 hours. Thanks to Joe Evyagotailak for providing specimen.

I love all of your fish art Paul, incredible detail and I can understand the hours you spend on something like this. Did you train as an artist or is it natural skill plus many dedicated hours?

Bravo Paul, I spent 4 years training as an illustrator and would be very proud of work of this quality. I gave it up as I found that commercial art wasn't for me and it is only very recently, almost 20 years later, that I have started painting again. It's a struggle as I am trying to unlearn everything that I learned as I can only paint in somebody else's style. Yours is your own so stick with it!
