Shake It, Start Over
I used to love reading critical feminist screeds from the '80s and '90s about Barbie, but not for reasons that are immediately clear. I'm sure there is something complex and treacherous going on with the creation of "unhealthy body image" idols, and I can't imagine decoding the mixed messages that women get from mass media... but that's not what really intrigued me. Rather, I became infatuated with the vehemence by which these writers pursued the belief that toys can shape our psyche.
That is why I think this is the most insidious toy ever made.
