Tower of Babel
The original Tower of Babel, the one first outlined in Genesis and later mythologized elsewhere, was built by humans as a testament to themselves. When God saw this, he toppled the tower and spread the people within across the face of the earth. According to this legend, this disaspora explains why we have multiple languages.
Brughel's version, Tower of Babel (c. 1563) [above], seems to fail because of because of poor engineering. It is not a outcome of linguistic cacophony, but rather the effects of bad engineering.
I have a print of this in my house. When people ask what it is, I say "The Internet."
