#FindFolicAcid Spartanburg, SC
At the Supermercado El Rey in Spartanburg, SC., we found some corn masa flour imported from Mexico included folic acid. Like Atlanta though, the corn tortillas were not made with corn masa flour that included folic acid.

Hispanic women in the US have a 21% higher chance of having a baby with a brain or spine birth defect than non-Hispanics. Adding folic acid (vitamin B9) to foods commonly eaten by Hispanics would reduce the risk of these serious birth defects.

In 2016, the Food and Drug Administration allowed - but did not require - folic acid to be added to corn masa flour. Researchers in Atlanta found that very little corn masa flour is being fortified, and no corn tortilas were made with fortified corn masa flour.
