Mosques vermelles amb abelles - Orquídea avispa - sawfly orchid -Ophrys tenthredinifera

The orchids, and especially the mediterranean ones, are a curious and very interesting group of plants. Does the name come from the greek όρχις that means "testicles" since many of the species they possess two tubers that liken enough that part of the anatomy.

It used to be said of the orchids that are to the vegetable Kingdom that that the man to the animal Kingdom. Saving the comparisons, the sentence makes reference to that evolved, specialized and extended of this group. There are orchids in all the ecosystems of the planet, lacking alone in the deserts and in the poles. What has given a quantity of enormous species, between 20.000 and 40.000 different species, and growing (according to who you read).

Here in the Delta of the Llobregat there is around a thirty of species.

Of the most attractive adaptations in the orchids it is their seed. For the dispersion they have opted to reduce to the minimum expression the seed eliminating of her the nutritious reservations, in such a way that the "sheath" of an orchid contains thousands or even millions of minuscule seeds that you/they go from some few millimeters to microns. To be able to germinate, the seeds associate with diverse types of mushrooms that contribute them the necessary nutrients during the growth and good part of their mature life forming micorrizas colonies (mico: mushroom, riza: root). This is one of the main reasons for which artificial reproduction of these plants is so complicated. When being carried out the germination in the face of the absence of the mushrooms that you/they form the micorriza and to lack the seed of nutritious reservations their germination it must be necessarily carried out on a broth of artificial nutritious cultivation and carried out under conditions of maximum sterilization.

In these latitudes, the orchids begin to sprout with the first rains that you/they close the summer and toward the months of January February they begin to flourish. According to the species, the floración extends until final of June. With the arrival of the heat, the plant dries off and it disappears being only the bulb buried to tolerate the heat of the summer.
