Red-winged Blackbird : First Flight
This red-winged blackbird chick had just fledged the nest a few moments before this picture was taken. Its mom was coercing her entire brood to follow her. This little one was stretching its wings, getting up its nerve to attempt its first flight. Which was little more than a glorified hop. But it was flight ! I like this picture because I see such an earnest look in his little face (and maybe a little apprehension) . He is really trying his best to do what his mom is asking him to do. But it must be a little scary to take that first leap and try out your new wings. And with his wings raised, you can see how immature his little wings are. He is only 10½ days old. I have the photo story of his life up till this day . That's how I know how old he is. I spent nearly 100 hours quietly observing and photographing this nest and never once did anything to stress the birds. I have a long lens.
As with so many of my flickr pictures, it has lost detail and sharpness when uploaded to flickr and even more since the new flickr resized it.
