"Composition In Four Colors" ~ by Suzan Frecon
Photoseries: Museum of Fine Arts @ Boston, Massachusetts
Exhibit: "Composition In Four Colors" (2010) oil on linen
Artist: Suzan Frecon (1941-___) American abstract painter, lives in New York City
MFA info: In her paintings, Frecon creates arrangements of shape and color that are both planned and discovered. She measures proportions using curves and ellipses based on Euclidean geometry -- note the compass holes in the canvas. Yet Frecon also relies on the chance chemical reactions between her many layers of hand-ground pigment and oils to achieve unique effects. Here two stacked canvases highlight a balance and tension between curve and edge, depth and shine. Look at the work from different angles and distances and notice how the image coheres and expands.
