tree swallow in flight with goose feather

    Newer Older

Tree Swallow looking for nesting materials. This takes a lot of shots for one good one.

I bet it does take a lot of shots! Excellent capture! Didn't your arms get tired throwing that feather in the air while holding the camera? ;-)

OK, I have two methods for the feathers, both of which involve getting the swallows used to. One is to put the feathers in a long tube and blow the feathers out at an opportune time-swallow-wise. They float down (without wind) and are easy to track. Another is to wind a little of the herl on the cut end of a long stem of field-grass and put this on the top of a pole and focus on that and try to snap when a bird comes by. Then photoshop out the thin green stalk.

These shots are amazing, thanks for posting. My favorite time of year is when I see the barn swallows back at our farm- a sure sign of spring.
