bill induced wild take

    Newer Older

Got the bill for my first surgery...so I definitely will be fundraising. I'm supposed to be getting financial aid through the hospital so hopefully the final total won't make my heart stop and my brain pee its pants.

Heya, Laura, I just had my first hospital stay (much more minor than yours). And I second the idea of getting a patient bill advocate. And definitely see about the financial aid. I went to St. Francis in Evanston and they had a deal that was something like being billed no more than 15% of your annual income? Mine was less than that (I had a $9700 bill, knocked down to $4800 with uninsured discount + paid it off right away.) so I didn't qualify for that part.

I hope your legions of fans come through on a fundraiser!

Oh my God!! This is terrible, Laura. I was in a similar situation before, the insurance company took back the coverage because they think my treatment was "experimental" and wanted all the money back (from all the past treatments which added up for more than $20K). But I think my doctor did something for me and it somehow got resolved (i don't really know how it happened). Please let me know if you are going to have some fundraising thing I will chip in or help in anyway I can. Have faith at the same time, too, and meanwhile just focus on getting healthy. I will be praying.

omg!! Health care in the US is insane. In a first world country, having access to health care should be a right not a luxury. Those fees are insane. I hope some brave politicians sort out your healthcare system sooner rather than later.
      Feeling for you!

The US needs a nation health service, hope it turns out to be a statement rather than a bill, keep the focus on health and don't let it stress you.

You know, I have thought at length about what would happen if I had a hospital bill like this. Your bill happens to be about 5 years income for me. I would put the bill up on Kickstarter with a one word description. "Help". That is my whole plan. Why??? Because there IS no other plan.

It's really sad! The healthcare system is a mess here for sure but if you are waiting for OBama's plan to come in and save us,...well,...you can forget that too. It will be even worse.

The entire system needs an overhaul and unfortunately our leaders on BOTH sides of the political fence don't get it. They also don't get those hellish bills that we do,...so there seems to be no sense of urgency for those clowns.

Togo you obviously don't know what you are talking about. This is exactly what the Affordable Care Act was designed to stop.

OK Jacob,....whatever. I'm not going to turn this into a political debate here. I won't take that bait. Keep believing,...just keep on believing. ;)

Well as a student nurse I think I happen to know a Hell of a lot more about the broken Healthcare system and the need for the ACA since you know, I actually work in Healthcare.

You might want to actually learn a thing or two before you open your mouth on a given subject.

    17. Togotooner1 30 months ago | reply

Wow! That was profound. Unfortunately, they must not teach communication skills in your particular nursing school. Funny how attending nursing school makes you an expert. Also, funny how you know so much about me to know that I have zero knowledge about the healthcare system when in fact we have no less than four medical professionals in my family.
You are one ignorant individual,..and please,.....do us all a favor and get over yourself.

Do you guys mind resolving your conflicts privately? Thank you!

    19. Duke Patton [deleted] 30 months ago | reply

You are not your family, they might know what the Hell is going on in healthcare but you sure as Hell don't.

Actually going to nursing school and working in a hospital in clinicals does actually teach me a lot about Healthcare since it is actually my profession. In the same way that butchers tend to know a lot about meat and plumbers tend to know a lot about plumbing. So I don't know why actually working in healthcare and studying healthcare would make me ignorant of healthcare... you think it would have the exact opposite effect.

I work as an eligibility worker for Medicaid in Ohio, and our republican governor is dragging his feet with expanding Medicaid. I am sure it's happening in many other states, too (where it would be expanded to single people who are under the income guidelines). I just hope that you can get the help you need somehow- I'll be willing to buy something or donate in some way. I am insured and am having a baby in the next few months. I've already been told what my bill will be, and it makes me want to shit a brick.
