Eustace Emoji
The New Yorker is holding its annual contest for re-interpretations of the famous Eustace Tilley cover (read more here www.newyorker.com/online/photocontests/eustace_tilley_2009 and www.newyorker.com/archive/2005/02/14/050214fa_fact2) and I thought this would be a good one.
So I figured I'd post it here!
I used Photoshop to batch process the emoji so that they have white backgrounds and used Foto-Mosaik-Edda for the mosaic:

It took some tweaking but I'm pretty happy with the final result.

2012 Update: Gawker ran a story about this cover:

The truth is, I never submitted it to the 2009 New Yorker contest. Thats because my girlfriend, Thessaly, was working there and it could have possibly been been a violation of their contest rules. So instead I posted it here and ... 3 years later it gets picked up by the web. Since Thessaly is no longer at the New Yorker, I decided to actually submit it for this year's contest. I'll let you guys know how it goes!
