COFO 23 and 5th World Forest Week: step one of shaping a new agenda for forests
On Monday 18 July, the 5th World Forest Week opened at FAO headquarters with a ceremony presided over by FAO Director-General Jose Graziano da Silva and His Royal Highness Prince Laurent of Belgium, FAO Special Ambassador for Forests and the Environment. Shortly afterwards, following the opening of the 23rd Session of the Committee on Forestry, FAO Forestry's flagship publication State of the World's Forests 2016 – Forests and agriculture -- was launched. Other items on the agenda include land use challenges and opportunities, plus five days of discussions and events geared towards "Shaping a new agenda for forests".
A rich schedule of events will take place during the 23rd Session of the Committee on Forestry and World Forest Week 5. Follow the webcast of the week's main events, and view the programmes here: COFO23 and WFW5.
Committee on Forestry
The Committee on Forestry (COFO) is the highest FAO Forestry statutory body. The biennial sessions of COFO (held at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy) bring together heads of forest services and other senior government officials to identify emerging policy and technical issues, to seek solutions and to advise FAO and others on appropriate action. Other international organizations and, increasingly, non-governmental groups participate in COFO. Participation in COFO is open to all FAO member countries.
