Abstract: The United Nations General Assembly designated 2019 – 2028 as the UN Decade of Family Farming and entrusted FAO and IFAD with the implementation of the decade. The Agricultural Development Economics Division (ESA) has updated its estimates of the number of family farms for use in the launch of the decade, in collaboration with the Statistics Division (ESS), and has made a thorough analysis of them. This seminar will present the evidence used from the agricultural censuses to update such estimates of the number of farms, family farms, farm size and farmland distribution worldwide. It will also consider evidence on farm labour and the gender of farm holders. Discussion will follow regarding key improvements to be made to the World Program for the Census of Agriculture in order to maximize its usefulness to policymakers and researchers.
