Friday June 21th – The role of Media
Covering the “hunger story” in the multimedia environment
In 1993, the image of a Sudanese child threatened by a vulture raised harsh ethical questions on media covering tragedies. The picture, however - like similar frames coming from the Horn of Africa during 2011 famine – has helped to mobilize citizens and governments.
How are “hunger stories” told today across different media outlets? Can media provide a valuable contribution in the effort to eradicate hunger and, if so, what are the ethics governing crisis journalism?
Journalists, communications experts and civil society actors will share their experience, searching for workable models of cooperation.
Moderator: Marina Lalovic, Babel TV
Panelists:
Enrique Yeves, FAO Chief of Communication
Adrian Finighan, News Presenter, Al Jazeera English
Claire Provost, Global Development Website, The Guardian
Diana Cariboni, Associate Editor in Chief, IPS
Gennaro Carotenuto, Journalist and Academician, University of Macerata
External Contributions:
IPSTV Feature: “Famine is gone but hunger remains” by Abdurrahman Warsameh, IPSTV correspondent in Somalia + Live skype video call
