23 May 2012, Mou, Chad - FAO Goodwill Ambassador football star Raúl González Blanco speaks with goat herders about their livestock during travels to Chad in support of joint efforts of FAO and the European Commission to help enable the most affected populations of the Sahel crisis feed themselves again. The initiative falls under the “Professional Football against Hunger” campaign developed by FAO and the European Commission in collaboration with the Association of European Professional Football Leagues (EPFL).
A combination of drought, chronic poverty, high food prices, displacement and conflict has led to dramatic declines in food production across the Sahel, where over 17 million people are at risk of hunger and more than 1 million children under five face acute malnutrition
