The Escape

Excerpt from The Escape

by Lenora Lee Dance

with Kei Lun Martial Arts and Enshin Karate, South San Francisco Dojo

featuring media design by Olivia Ting, music by Francis Wong, text by Genny Lim, and cinematography by Tatsu Aoki, filmed by Ben Estabrook and Eric Koziol

The Escape is inspired by stories of women who had become vulnerable upon arrival into the United States during the early 20th century. It seeks to shed light on the experiences of these women in the context of the period's social history for Chinese in America as well as for women in the society as a whole, alongside the struggles and achievements of the 20th-century women¹s movement, which took on such issues as child labor and human trafficking.

The Escape is being developed by de Young Artist Fellow Lenora Lee during her yearlong fellowship and will be presented in full on November 8 and 9 at the museum. For more information on presentations of works in progress and related events, please visit the Artist Fellows page at www.deyoungmuseum.org/artistfellows.
