The Cathedral of St. John the Divine is the Cathedral of the Episcopal Church of New York. In 2001 the north transept burned."Phoenix" is by artist Xu Bing. Mr. Xu and his production team created this piece from 2008 to 2010. Xu Bing often comments on global issues such as literacy, overcoming tragedy, and underrepresented populations. The "Phoenix" weighs about 12 tons. The male "Feng" is 90 feet long and the female "Huang" is about 100 feet long. The piece is made out of construction materials and tools from building sites [and dumps]. The "Phoenixes" are suspended from aluminum trusses further supported by tie-backs to the Cathedral's piers and arches.
