Envy - Pieces of Home 58 - Nara Toukae 2012

The lantern festival in Nara is best enjoyed by those who can deal with the humid summer heat and crowds.
This year's lantern configurations were interesting, but it would have been nice to get a bird's eye view. The field is extremely large and the volunteers painstakingly plan and place the lanterns to form beautiful shapes. Some are small, but most are really large; too difficult to see as a whole from a ground level view. So, I opted for a short and sweet approach this year.
One of the shapes that attracted some attention was this green heart, innocuously place among some larger patterns we couldn't make heads nor tails of. The locals said "Cute!", I thought, "Hmmm, envy?"...
Cultural differences can be interesting.
