Climate Strike in San Rafael
Young activists and their allies led a climate strike in San Rafael, California, to demand action on climate change. This community protest took place on Dec. 6th, 2019 and was hosted by the Sunrise Movement, 350Marin, Sierra Club Marin and Sustainable San Rafael.
The event started with the creation of a beautiful street mural in the city plaza, to remind passers-by that “the earth is watching.” Participants then marched to four major banks that are financing fossil-fuel development: Bank of America, Wells Fargo, JPMorgan Chase and Citi Bank. At each stop, activists chanted, listed each bank’s gas and oil investments and asked them to stop spending tens of billions every year on new fossil fuel projects that are harming our lives.
The rally ended with music and speeches at the city plaza, featuring the lovely harmonies of `Til Dawn, a youth ‘a cappella’ ensemble, and sing-alongs by the Freedom Singers. Speakers from Sunrise Marin and other local environmentalists took turns to protest corporate greed and government inertia and demand a Green New Deal.
GreenChange.net director Fabrice Florin took photos and videos of this climate strike, featuring young activists Naomi Bridges, Katrina Osborn, Sylvia Potovsky, Niklas Ugalde, as well as their allies Greg Brockbank, Bill Carney, Patrick Costello, Marilyn Price and Silke Valentine, to name but a few.
