The origins of Hıdırlık Kulesi (Tower) are a mystery. Situated in Karaalioglu Park overlooking the Roman Harbour, its foundations are said to date from the 1st or 2nd century AD. It is commonly believed to have been built as a tomb for a great leader and this is supported by bits of fresco on the exterior. Its location is perfect to serve as a lighthouse or lookout for shipping in Antalya's harbour, and apparently the Romans used it for this purpose. It may also have been a church for a time.
