S³ - Evan Zodl

Designed and folded August 2012. Folded from an uncut (35cm x 35cm) square sheet of tant.

For the past few days, I have spent countless hours perfecting this design. Originally, I set out to design a new tessellation, and it seems that I have accomplished just that! What is really interesting about this design is that it can be considered an action model for several different reasons...

After collapsing along all of the creases, you end up with a very interesting 3-dimensional tessellation. By simply flattening and twisting the tessellation, you achieve something like this! This model can be completely flattened, and the spiral can even be reversed by spinning the stars in the opposite direction. I plan to upload a video at some point to show exactly what I mean.

Overall, I am very happy with the result! However, I still cannot come up with a name! The best I could come up with was "S³" or "S-cubed" (meaning Spiraling Stacked Stars). If you have any suggestions, please let me know!

If there is enough interest in this design, I would certainly consider releasing the CP. Please let me know what you think! All comments are greatly appreciated! :)
