belmont tunnel. los angeles, ca. 2000.
throwback thursday, scans from the archives.
the belmont tunnel was LA's first subway, part of the pacific electric "red car" trolley system which was shut down in the 1950s. the red cars ran all over socal - one could ride the trolley from venice beach to san bernardino.
for decades, the abandoned belmont tunnel in downtown los angeles was a mecca for the LA graffiti/mural scene, with stunning artwork getting up on a regular basis.
in the name of progress, the area was bulldozed in 2007 to build condos. the tunnel is now sealed shut and inacessible.
