222 - Columbia, South Carolina

Yes, this is the capital building of South Carolina. Yes, that is the Confederate flag flying in front of it. It's stunning to see it. Being here I realize that Portland is a very different place. Seeing this, talking to the people, eating the food - I honestly find it hard to believe we all live in the same country. Our ways of doing things are so completely different that it really does feel like two separate cultures to me. I appreciate diversity, I love our differences and I certainly don't want to live in a homogeneous society. I'm not trying to be judgmental and I accept the fact that I don't really understand how life is here in the South. However, this flag is such a powerful, hurtful and negative symbol for so many people. Seeing it flown without pause or apology (in fact, proudly) at a capital building of one of our country's states.........I don't really have words for it.
