Needlepoint For Men

Ah. The front cover says it all. I always knew about the existence of this book, but I had never seen an actual copy until I ran across it in a library sale in Lincoln, Nebraska. It is now the crown jewel of my Extreme Craft collection.

Tell me: besides the goofy looking pic of Rosey, what's so funny about this? Why not needlepoint?

What a badass. I'm a big intimidating football player. I'm gonna needlepoint, and you're gonna like it! You know what else? It's all right to cry! You know why? Crying gets the sad out of you!

It almost looks like he's needlepointing a centerfold.

My former-football-player math teacher in the 4th grade used to repeatedly show us a film of Rosey Grier needlepointing (actually I think he was cross stitching in the film). It was my first exposure to any sort of needlework. Rosey Grier is probably why I've taught my son needlework. At eight, he sews, cross stitches, and embroiders. Thanks, Rosey.

I am requesting permission to use this image in a book that I am writing entitled Peace Fibres: Stitching a Soulful World. In it, I enlist fibre work as metaphor and manifestation of harmonious relationship to self, others, and the larger world. I would use the photo in a chapter on "Weaving Diversity" in which I do refer to Rosey Grier's needlepointing.
May I use the image? If so, please advise if any fees are involved.
Thank you for considering my request. I look forward to your response.
      Respectfully,
      Karen Lohn
