Gouty Tophi in the Helix of the Ear

This 26 year old man has tophaceous gout that has manifested as tophi in the ear and in his hands. I post these photos here as a service to people in the medical profession and also for people with gout because tophi in the ear are something that everybody learns about but rarely sees. These photo are used with the consent of the patient.

A "tophus" is a deposit of uric acid beneath the skin usually near a joint. "Tophi" is the plural of "tophus." Gout is a form of arthritis associated with high levels of uric acid in the body and tophi are generally seen in more severe cases of gout.
