Stranger No. 31/100 - Tomo
This picture is #31 in my 100 Strangers project.
I met Tomo in Pitt St mall on my way home from work one day. It wasn't the first time that I had spotted him in the area, but it was the first good opportunity to approach him for a portrait.
He was sitting down having a smoke listening to some tunes. I have a very poor track record of asking strangers what they are listening to; I need to make a point of finding out. There was a free seat next to him, so I sat down and jumped right in with the question.
He readily agreed to a photo and after I had taken the first shot asked what it was for. It's interesting how many people get through the first portrait before asking what it's all about. Almost as if they are having reservations or realise that it is an unusual request that they have just agreed to.
After the explanation, he was only mildly interested. In an effort to make the shots available to my strangers, I asked if he would like a copy, mentioning I could point him to my project or email him the file. He was still not interested, so I thanked him and continued on my way.
Considering that I frequently walk through Pitt St mall and recognise other folks (including non-performers), I wonder if anyone recognises me or what I'm doing. Interesting thought.
