Schools Out

Newer Older

Clarke County, GA

This is an old African American schoolhouse that has been recently condemned and will disappear soon. I wanted to get a good photo of it before it was gone. It's one of those places that never has good light so I waited for a cloudy day, which seem to fit. This old structure is sad. The two buzzards on the roof didn't help either.

I think this all the time, but don't say it out loud too much: Why do places like this have to be condemned? If no on eis going to keep it up, why can't it just stay till it falls in. What is it hurting? I guess I love these old pplaces too much and you capture them better than anyone.

What it is hurting is people like us that go in and around to take photos. It becomes a liability. Or an eyesore on the property of someone who does not see the beauty in it. Not everyone does, even if it is treated so beautifully as here. It is also sitting on land that would be perfect for a new subdivision...

Don't get me wrong, I'm on your side and wish more of these structures would either be saved (and in way that is mindful of the past) or left to their own.

In a perfect world, us rural photographers would have pure unmolested Americana on every corner...

I'll just keep on being a liability and I hope for the best. I wish all people saw the beauty of these places. Pat and Dagmar keep doing what you do best, documenting our wonderful ruralness!

    Damn subdivisions.
