Myrmecophile hoverfly

Microdon sp. (Diptera, Syrphidae) female. Size: 13 mm. A rather unusual hoverfly, regarding its behavior. Larvae live deep in ant nests, adults do not visit flowers, but remain near the ant colonies.

 

Single mixed light exposure taken with the MP-E65 lens at 2,2x magnification, f/10, 1/50 sec, ISO-400. The background's light is natural, the subject was lit by diffused flash. Uncropped.
