Helicopter and boarding teams from EU Naval Force frigate FS Floréal approaches a dhow for inspection - Nov 2012
Warships and their boarding teams routinely conduct visual or physical checks of vessels transiting the High Risk Area. These checks, or “friendly boardings” are conducted to gather intelligence by speaking with the crews of fishing and trading vessels in the region, and to help make masters aware of the Best Management Practices (BMP), i.e. self-protection measures against pirates.
When EU Naval Force - Somalia assets locate suspicious vessels, e.g. following sighting reports by merchant vessels and patrol aircraft (MPRA), and investigation confirms the suspicion action will be taken in order to render a suspected pirate group incapable of further pirate operation.
