Fruit and Vegetable Stand in Bari Vecchia

Bari Vecchia (Old Bari) is a triangular peninsula surrounded by the blue Adriatic Sea: a maze of tiny streets and alleys, lined with churches, shops, restaurants and homes, with shrines, balconies, and laundry overhead.

They had beautiful produce at this stand -- we bought some fat, juicy oranges to eat on the train. We talked to the two men working here using our very limited Italian. I told them that my grandparents were born in Bari, and one said, "Sangue Italiano!" (Italian blood) making a hypodermic needle gesture to the vein on his arm. We liked that and starting using the phrase with everyone else we met. (We didn't use the hypodermic needle gesture, though, because we thought it looked too druggy.)
