Kayan or Kenyah woman with baby in traditional carrier

In the "waiting hut" next to the jetty in front of a longhouse near Belaga. (Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo).

A baby carrier is known as a ba' in the local language.

See also www.tribalarts.com/feature/borneo/ under the heading "Baby carriers".

Since the longhouse was shared by members of the Kayan and the Kenyah tribe, she could be from either tribe. All up-river tribes in Sarawak are called "orang ulu", or "people of the upper river".
