Southwest Airlines route map, January 1996
The Southwest Airlines route map from January 1996, when it first entered the Florida market with service to Fort Lauderdale and Tampa - two airports that it dominates today.
The Dallas-based carrier did briefly serve Florida via its subsidiary TranStar Airlines (here in 1986) until it shut the carrier down in 1987.
In 1996, Southwest was still early in its expansion to the east coast, which began with the launch of Baltimore/Washington service in 1993.
Southwest operated 50 737-200s, 149 737-300s and 25 737-500s in January 1996, the Flight Fleets Analyzer shows.
