Yep, came out this week-- the dotscreen pattern is from my friend Mike Cena's company ...who are doing an exclusive digital "popefont" for Battling Boy. I recommend their products!

Why did you call this image Amano? It´s because the influence of Yoshitaka Amano work´s?

    7. ernest.borg9 75 months ago | reply

Yes--it was my attempt to channel a bit of the master's style. He was the artist on the book when it first appeared (P Craig Russell drew this one). I like Amano's take on Sandman...and love his work in general, he's very inventive.

Love PCR's work as was a good project to work on.

The linework and color separations made me think of Patrick Nagel!

Have you ever had any direct contact with Amano? I'd expect his is a brain you'd want to pick.

Glad to hear about the "Popefont". The difference between your hand-lettering and even less standard comic fonts is pronounced, as in Batman: Year 100. But I hope and expect you'll still do some of the SFX and whatnot by hand; it's a signature part of your work (no pun intended).

    11. ernest.borg9 75 months ago | reply

Yep-- the SFX are embedded in the artwork a la Eisner/Sim. I felt the lettering needed to be more clear for younger readers-- plus this way, all the foreign editions will looks the same in terms of type design.

Don't know Amano personally...had a chance to meet him here when he was staying in NYC to install a big exhibit of his work, but I was out of town that the time.

Amano is incredible. You've created a nice blend of your style with an homage to his. He truly is a master.
