Week 12: That Puck is Mine!!!
Week 12: I went to photograph some hockey players because a friend at work plays on the local league team and thought it would be a good opportunity for me since I have never really photographed many sports.
It isn't quite the shot I had in mind (at least not my positioning). I would have rather had the shot looking straight into the blue players face with the puck visible, the stick hitting the ground with ice spraying up behind him. That might require being on the ice or close to it. I should have waited more at either end of the rink and sat at 250mm, prefocused for a line or something, and fired away when the players skated towards me.
This was taken with the Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 @ f/2, and it is a bit of a chore to focus for sports as quick paced as hocky. I just put in high speed drive mod and when I get near the focus point fire off a small burst of shots while continuing past the focus point.
The 60-250mm f/4 worked fairly well, but required ISO 3200 or so for a decent shutter speed (1/500 or 1/640 or so). I got by with it at ISO 1600-2500 or so and 1/400th. The ISO was much better on the shots with the Rokinon at f/2, but I had to manual focus so my hit rate was lower. An aperture of f/2.8 would have been acceptable, but I know the 60-250mm f/4 is not an indoor lens anyway.
