Citibank branch at the Arnold, Constable Building
One of the fabled retail outfits of 19th Century New York, Arnold, Constable & Company is now remembered--when it is remembered--for being another entry in New York's big bloated list of defunct department stores, having expired in 1975 after just about 150 years of business. Built in 1856, 307-311 Canal Street was the site of the company's first big store.
I say a little bit more about Arnold, Constable & Company and its store on my New York City landmarks blog, The Masterpiece Next Door.
