Some 25,500 persons have escaped from East Berlin
since the erection of the infamous wall dividing East and West Berlin
early Sept. 11, 1961.
There has also been some unlucky ones, about 133 who tried but failed.
Here East German policemen lift the body of 18-year-old Peter Fechter,
one of the unfortunates,
across the barbed wire fence after he was felled by a hail of Communist bullets
while trying to escape to the West, Sept. 17, 1962.
