Castlerigg Stone Circle S05123

Castlerigg Stone Circle has been called the most beautifully located stone circle in Britain, in a spectacular setting on a high moor above Keswick, with a 360° panorama of the fells and mountains of the Lake District. Dating from about 3000 BC, there is a small rectangle of stones within the circle, which is unusual in stone circles, also a small mound which suggests a burial place. Some suggest it could have been an astronomical observatory.

I’m back! Two weeks in the Lake District, erratic weather - some days very dull and wet, a few hot and dry. Sadly the wettest day was the middle Saturday when ~esoteric~ came over to show me around the Northern fells. I did manage to get a few good but short walks in despite the medical problems with the legs and infected toe, and I managed to take over 3,700 photos - yes, that is a lot but I’ve already deleted a load and it’s down to just over 2,000 now. With any luck I may have sorted them all out by the time I go again next May.

a longish journal entry on my holiday
