Greg LeMond - 1985 Coors Classic - Napa to Sacramento Road Stage

Greg LeMond

1985 Coors Classic Bicycle Race

West Sacramento, California

Greg LeMond banks to the right coming off the Yolo Causeway and into the City of West Sacramento during the second stage of the 1985 Coors Classic bicycle race. The stage began in Napa, California and finished in Sacramento, California.

Bernault Hinault, LeMond's teammate, had won the Tour de France just weeks earlier, both aided and challenged by Lemond who came in second. It was LeMond, though, who won the 1985 Coors Classic and went on in 1986 to become the first American to win the Tour de France. The last Coors Classic bicycle race was held in 1988. Beginning in 2006, the Amgen Tour of California finally filled the void of large scale professional road cycling races in California.

Hinault won the Tour de France five times (1978, 1979, 1981, 1982, and 1985).

LeMond was a three time Tour de France champion (1986, 1989, and 1990).
