Old Sacramento Criterium -- 1985 Coors Classic
Old Sacramento Criterium
1985 Coors Classic Bicycle Race
From my early days in photography. A little more depth of field and it might have been a real gem. Run your cursor over the photo to see notes on the riders.
Steve Bauer (red jersey, No. 9, Team Celestial Seasonings / Red Zinger / La Vie Claire) leads a group of riders around a turn off the backstrectch of the course during the Old Sacramento Criterium, the third stage of the 1985 Coors Classic bicycle race. The Raleigh rider in the yellow and black jersey has been identified as Steve Tilford who has a current cycling website/blog at www.stevetilford.com .
Further comments (see comments section) have possibly identified Tom Brosnowski riding in the white jersey and helmet for the the Schwinn team, and possibly Ron Hayman riding for the 7-11 team.
The criterium was known for its brutal stretch of cobblestone roadway (visible in the background) that took a toll on riders and equipment alike. Earlier that day, the riders completed a stage from Napa to Sacramento, California. The last Coors Classic bicycle race was held in 1988. Beginng in 2006, the Amgen Tour of California finally filled the void of large scale professional road cycling races in California.
Scanned from my old faded prints ... still looking for the negatives!!!
